Because writing is so personal, there were many things compelling me to embark upon this journey. My reasons were diverse. First, I wanted to find a way to bond with my daughter. I quickly found our young adult book dialogues opened the lines of communication and allowed us to discuss issues, which may have been very uncomfortable in any other situation. Second, I craved an ingenious way to preserve my mother-in-law’s and my father’s mannerisms. Time was steeling away their memories faster than I was willing to let them go, telling me my children would never really know them if I didn’t do something quick. I began this series with a plan to embed them solidly into the book in hopes that my children would be able to fall in love with them vicariously through eerily similar book characters (my son must be older to read the books…obviously). Finally, patient care is a wonderful career. I wouldn’t change my profession for anything. At the same time, the emotions I’ve witnessed while caring for people’s family members and the emotions I’ve felt have left a soul-deep and permanent impression in me. I cried so many times with grieving family member and for innocent victims. I wish – down to my core – I would have been able to miraculously ‘save’ some of my patients from their untimely deaths. With this series and in my books, I can.
